Meet the Gentle Giant with the World’s Longest Claws!
The Schleich Therizinosaurus brings one of the most unusual dinosaurs ever discovered into the playroom. With a long neck, enormous body and gigantic curved claws, it may look like a fearsome hunter, but this extraordinary dinosaur probably preferred plants!
When Did Therizinosaurus Live?
Therizinosaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, around 72 to 66 million years ago. It lived near the end of the age of dinosaurs, at roughly the same time as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.
What Did Therizinosaurus Eat?
Therizinosaurus was probably a herbivore, although it may occasionally have eaten small animals or insects. Its long neck helped it reach leafy vegetation, while its huge claws may have pulled branches closer to its mouth.
It belonged to the theropod group of dinosaurs, which included famous meat-eaters such as Tyrannosaurus rex. Therizinosaurus shows that not every theropod was a hungry carnivore!
How Big Was Therizinosaurus?
Therizinosaurus could grow approximately 9 to 10 metres long, stand up to 5 metres tall and weigh around 3 to 5 tonnes. Its broad body probably contained a large digestive system for breaking down tough plant material.
Where Did Therizinosaurus Live?
Therizinosaurus lived in what is now Mongolia. Its fossils have been discovered in the Gobi Desert, but during the Late Cretaceous the region included rivers, floodplains and well-vegetated areas filled with food for large plant-eating dinosaurs.
Awesome Therizinosaurus Facts
- Its name means “scythe lizard”, inspired by its enormous curved claws.
- Its claw bones could exceed 50 centimetres long, making them the longest known claws of any land animal.
- The complete claws would have been even longer when covered by their outer keratin sheaths.
- Scientists think the claws may have pulled down branches, stripped leaves, helped with display or defended against predators.
- Therizinosaurus was probably covered with feathers, giving this already unusual dinosaur an even stranger appearance.
- When its fossils were first studied, scientists mistakenly thought its enormous claws belonged to a giant turtle-like reptile!
Those Giant Claws Mean Business!
A hungry predator creeps closer, expecting an easy meal. Therizinosaurus raises its powerful arms and reveals three enormous claws on each hand. It may be a plant-eater, but this gentle giant is certainly not defenceless!
The figure’s movable arms bring extra action to Cretaceous adventures. Pose those incredible claws to gather imaginary branches or warn off a hungry predator. With the superb quality and realistic detailing expected from Schleich dinosaur figures, Therizinosaurus is ready to become a standout favourite in any young dinosaur expert’s collection.
