The Schleich Postosuchus brings one of the Triassic Period’s most formidable predators into the playroom. With a heavily built skull, armoured skin and a powerful mouth filled with sharp teeth, this crocodile relative was a creature even the earliest dinosaurs needed to avoid.

When Did Postosuchus Live?

Postosuchus lived during the Late Triassic Period, approximately 228 to 208 million years ago. It shared its world with some of the earliest dinosaurs, long before giants such as Stegosaurus, Brontosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex appeared.

What Did Postosuchus Eat?

Postosuchus was a carnivore and one of the largest predators in its environment. It probably hunted early dinosaurs, armoured reptiles, plant-eating dicynodonts and other animals it could overpower.

Its deep jaws were filled with large, serrated teeth shaped like daggers. These fearsome teeth were well suited to gripping prey and slicing through meat.

How Big Was Postosuchus?

Postosuchus could grow approximately 4 to 6 metres long and may have weighed between 250 and 450 kilograms. Its hind legs were longer and more powerful than its front legs, giving this heavily built hunter an unusual stance.

Where Did Postosuchus Live?

Postosuchus lived in what is now the United States. Its fossils have been discovered in places including Texas and North Carolina, where it roamed ancient floodplains, river systems and seasonally dry landscapes.

• Postosuchus was not a dinosaur. It belonged to the crocodile side of the archosaur family tree.
• Its name means “crocodile from Post”, after Post Quarry near the town of Post in Texas.
• Bony plates called osteoderms helped protect its neck, back and tail.
• Its front legs were much shorter than its hind legs, leading scientists to debate whether it sometimes stood or moved on two legs.
• Postosuchus was larger than many of the early meat-eating dinosaurs living alongside it.
