The Schleich Brontosaurus brings one of the most famous long-necked dinosaurs into the playroom. With its enormous body, powerful legs and wonderfully long neck and tail, this gentle giant must have been an incredible sight as it travelled across the Jurassic landscape.

When Did Brontosaurus Live?

Brontosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic Period, around 156 to 147 million years ago. It shared its prehistoric world with dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus, Diplodocus and the fearsome Allosaurus.

What Did Brontosaurus Eat?

Brontosaurus was a herbivore. It needed enormous quantities of ferns, cycads, conifers and other prehistoric plants to keep its huge body fuelled.

Its simple teeth were better suited to stripping vegetation than chewing it. Brontosaurus probably swallowed mouthfuls of plants and relied on its enormous digestive system to break them down.

How Big Was Brontosaurus?

Brontosaurus could grow approximately 20 to 22 metres long and may have weighed around 15 to 25 tonnes. Its long neck and tail made up much of that extraordinary length, while four strong, pillar-like legs supported its massive body.

Where Did Brontosaurus Live?

Brontosaurus lived in what is now the western United States. Its world included river channels, open floodplains, forests and seasonally dry areas filled with the vegetation needed to feed enormous herds of plant-eating dinosaurs.

• Its name means “thunder lizard”, a perfect name for an animal whose footsteps may have made the ground tremble.
• Brontosaurus had an enormous body but a surprisingly small head.
• Its long neck allowed it to browse across a wide area without moving its massive body.
• Its muscular tail helped with balance and may also have provided protection from predators.
• For many years, scientists classified Brontosaurus as a type of Apatosaurus, but a major study published in 2015 helped restore Brontosaurus as its own genus.
