Meet the Fish-Eating Hunter with the Heavy Claw!

The Schleich Baryonyx brings one of the Early Cretaceous Period’s most unusual predators into the playroom. With a crocodile-like snout, saw-like teeth and an enormous hooked claw on each hand, this remarkable dinosaur was superbly equipped for hunting beside prehistoric rivers.

When Did Baryonyx Live?

Baryonyx lived during the Early Cretaceous Period, around 130 to 125 million years ago. It appeared millions of years before famous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.

What Did Baryonyx Eat?

Baryonyx was a carnivore and piscivore, which means it ate meat and fed heavily on fish. Its long, narrow jaws and numerous conical teeth were excellent for gripping slippery prey.

Fossilised fish scales were discovered inside the body cavity of one Baryonyx skeleton, giving scientists direct evidence of its fish-eating diet. Bones from a young plant-eating dinosaur were also found, showing that fish were not the only thing on its menu.

How Big Was Baryonyx?

Baryonyx may have grown approximately 7.5 to 10 metres long and weighed around 1.2 to 2 tonnes. The best-known skeleton may have belonged to an animal that was still growing, so fully grown adults could have been even larger.

Where Did Baryonyx Live?

Baryonyx lived in what is now southern England. Its environment included rivers, lakes, wetlands and forested floodplains where fish and other animals provided plenty of hunting opportunities.

Awesome Baryonyx Facts

  • Its name means “heavy claw”, inspired by the enormous hooked claw on each hand.
  • Its largest thumb claw measured approximately 31 centimetres along its curve.
  • Baryonyx had a long, low snout shaped rather like that of a modern crocodile.
  • It had around 96 teeth, far more than many other large meat-eating dinosaurs.
  • Fossilised stomach contents provide direct evidence that Baryonyx ate both fish and other dinosaurs.
  • It belonged to the spinosaur family and was a relative of the enormous Spinosaurus.

Open Wide for a Prehistoric Fishing Trip!

A large fish swims close to the riverbank. Baryonyx lowers its long snout towards the water, snaps its jaws shut and raises one enormous hooked claw. This Cretaceous fishing trip could end with a very slippery lunch!

The figure’s opening mouth reveals rows of dangerous saw-like teeth, adding extra snapping action to prehistoric adventures. With the superb quality and realistic detailing expected from Schleich dinosaur figures, Baryonyx is ready for riverbank hunts and a special place in any young dinosaur expert’s collection.
