The Schleich Amargasaurus was no ordinary long-necked dinosaur. Two remarkable rows of tall spines ran along its neck and back, giving this unusual plant-eater one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the prehistoric world.
When Did Amargasaurus Live?
Amargasaurus lived during the Early Cretaceous Period, around 129 to 122 million years ago. It appeared millions of years after famous Jurassic sauropods such as Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus.
What Did Amargasaurus Eat?
Amargasaurus was a herbivore. Its relatively short neck suggests it fed mainly on low and medium-height vegetation, including ferns, cycads and other leafy prehistoric plants.
How Big Was Amargasaurus?
Amargasaurus grew approximately 9 to 10 metres long and may have weighed around 2.5 to 4 tonnes. That sounds enormous, but it was actually quite small compared with many other sauropods.
Where Did Amargasaurus Live?
Amargasaurus lived in what is now Patagonia in Argentina. Its world included river channels, floodplains and plenty of vegetation for a hungry plant-eater to browse.

- Its name means “La Amarga lizard”, after the rock formation in Argentina where its fossils were discovered.
- Two rows of bony spines ran along its neck and the front of its back.
- The longest of these spines could reach approximately 60 centimetres.
- Scientists are still debating whether the spines supported a sail, formed protective spikes or were used for display.
- Only one Amargasaurus skeleton has been discovered, but it is one of the most complete sauropod skeletons known from its time.
