Desert Legend — Porsche 959 Dakar Tribute
The 959 was built to show just how far Porsche could push technology, and on the road it did exactly that — all-wheel drive, twin turbos, and enough speed to outrun almost anything in the world. But someone at Porsche looked at this cutting-edge supercar and decided to send it into the desert. The result was one of the great unlikely victories in motorsport history. In 1986, car number 186, driven by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne, won the Paris-Dakar Rally against some of the toughest terrain and harshest conditions ever seen. This Hot Wheels tribute captures that famous machine in its unmistakable livery, softened for modern licensing but still instantly recognisable. It is part supercar, part rally raid weapon, and one of the coolest Porsches ever created.

When a Supercar Went to the Desert
The Porsche 959 began life as a technological flagship, developed as one of the most advanced performance cars of the 1980s and, in road-going form, the fastest production car in the world at launch. Its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, lightweight construction, and twin-turbo flat-six made it feel years ahead of its rivals.
For the Paris-Dakar Rally, Porsche adapted the 959 with reinforced suspension, all-terrain tyres, and a rally-raid specification that could survive one of the harshest events in motorsport. The gamble paid off in 1986 when Metge and Lemoyne won the event in car number 186, while Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur secured second place in another 959. It was a remarkable triumph, made even more significant by the brutal nature of that year’s rally.
This Hot Wheels version recreates the spirit of that winning Porsche, including the famous period livery, while tactfully omitting the original cigarette branding. That actually does nothing to diminish the appeal — the shape, the stance, and the colours still tell the story instantly. For collectors, this is one of the all-time great off-road racing tributes: a supercar that conquered the desert.
