Luxury Where the Road Ends — 1993 Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Long before the G-Class became a celebrity favourite and a fixture outside luxury boutiques, it was a serious off-road machine built to work in places ordinary vehicles could not reach. The 1993 Mercedes-Benz G-Class sits at a fascinating point in that evolution. Its military-derived chassis, upright body, solid axles, and locking differentials remained ready for punishing terrain, while Mercedes-Benz refinement made long-distance travel far more comfortable. It could cross a muddy field, climb a rocky mountain track, or tackle a remote expedition before carrying its occupants into town with quiet dignity. For a proper road trip beyond the sealed road, few vehicles were more capable.

From Military Workhorse to Luxury Off-Roader
Development of the G-Class began during the early 1970s as a joint project between Mercedes-Benz and Austrian manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch. The brief was to create a durable all-terrain vehicle suitable for military, commercial, and civilian duties. Production began in 1979, with the resulting Geländewagen quickly establishing a reputation for strength, adaptability, and genuine off-road performance.
By the time this 1993 model appeared, the G-Class had moved well beyond its basic utilitarian beginnings. The W463 generation introduced permanent four-wheel drive, a more refined interior, improved safety equipment, and levels of comfort expected from a Mercedes-Benz. Importantly, those upgrades did not dilute its fundamental ability. The ladder-frame chassis, solid axles, low-range gearing, and three locking differentials still made it one of the most capable production four-wheel drives in the world.
That combination placed the G-Class alongside the Range Rover in a very exclusive category. Both proved that a vehicle could offer serious back-country ability without forcing its occupants to accept the bare-metal simplicity of a conventional working 4x4. The Range Rover leaned towards comfortable country-estate motoring, while the G-Class retained a stronger military and expedition character.
Ready for the Long Way Around
The G-Class belongs in the Car Culture Road Trip collection because it removes almost every restriction from the journey. If the motorway becomes a country road, the country road becomes gravel, and the gravel track eventually disappears, the Mercedes can simply continue travelling.
Its square body also provides excellent passenger and luggage space, while the high driving position and broad glass area give the driver a clear view of the surrounding terrain. It may not travel with the speed of a performance wagon or the efficiency of a modern crossover, but few road-trip vehicles offer the same reassuring sense that almost no destination is beyond reach.
Why Collectors Will Love It
The classic G-Class is a gift to die-cast designers. Its flat body panels, exposed door hinges, round headlights, upright windscreen, simple grille, and spare-wheel-ready rear body create an instantly recognisable shape at approximately 1:64 scale.
This casting celebrates the G-Class before oversized wheels, extreme AMG power, and urban celebrity culture began dominating its image. Metal/Metal construction gives the model suitable weight and solidity, while Real Riders rubber tyres complement its authentic off-road stance. It is a handsome addition for Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts, classic 4x4 collectors, and anyone who believes the best road trips begin where the road ends.
